The charm of the National Gallery of Modern Art Bangalore

While I always enjoyed dabbling in art as a child, it was during my university years as a student of French literature that my appreciation for art truly blossomed. As part of our studies, we explored the evolution of European art across centuries, diving into the works of masters like Monet, Picasso, and others. That’s when I began developing a deeper understanding of modern art—and, of course, picking a few favorites along the way.
Fast forward several years to 2010, when I was living in Delhi and had the chance to visit the beautiful NGMA (National Gallery of Modern Art) there. Walking through those halls, I was captivated by the works of Nandalal Bose and his contemporaries. It was a turning point for me, where my growing interest in modern Indian art found new depth and direction.
Life then brought us to Bangalore, and I was delighted to discover that this city had its own NGMA. Naturally, I had to visit it—and it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the place.
Now, it’s become a ritual of sorts for us to visit nearly every month. What I love most is that there’s always something new—fresh exhibitions, inspiring workshops, and the chance to see the works of artists I hadn’t encountered before. It was here at NGMA Bangalore that I first came across the art of Yusuf Arakkal, whose powerful works left a lasting impression on me.
The thoughtfully curated exhibitions range from iconic modernists to emerging talents, each offering something new to discover with every visit. Whether it’s the strokes of a Souza painting, the contemplative spaces created by Raza, or the quirky installations that make you pause and think—the artwork here is as diverse as it is engaging.
This gallery has given me countless such discoveries, which is why I keep returning. Each visit offers something different—be it an unexpected piece that makes me pause, a familiar favorite seen in a new light, or simply the joy of wandering through those serene galleries.
Every visit feels like an invitation to slow down, observe, and immerse myself in stories told through brushstrokes and sculptures. It’s a place that makes you want to come back, not out of routine, but out of love for the atmosphere it creates and the inspiration it offers.
