Balcony picnic: creating a cosy picnic retreat at home

Weekends are the perfect time for a fun and affordable gathering, and there's no better way to enjoy it than with a picnic! While we often think of picnics as outdoor events in nature, have you ever tried having one indoors, on your balcony, or in your garden?

Prep your bacony or the corner of your garden

Prepare your balcony, terrace, or garden corner for the ultimate picnic experience. Clear the space, set up comfortable seating with cushions or blankets, and add a small table for snacks and drinks. Decorate with potted plants, fairy lights, or lanterns to create a cozy ambiance. Ensure there's enough shade or sun depending on your preference and with a little effort, you can transform any outdoor nook into a charming retreat perfect for relaxing and enjoying good company.

Get creative!

To kick off your outdoor adventure, lay down an old throw or a vibrant, colourful bedsheet on your balcony floor or garden space. It's not just about picnic basics; it's about transforming your outdoor setting into a comfortable, stylish retreat.

Food and drinks

Get creative with your food and drink choices for the picnic. Instead of opting for store-bought items, take the time to prepare everything from scratch. Homemade goodies always taste much better!

Pack almonds, grapes, berries, and other goodies alongside your cheese selection. Utilise what you already have at home, and with a few berries or mint leaves, you can beautifully garnish your dishes.

Olives and hummus are always delicious additions. Remember to prepare some refreshing drinks. I have here with some ginger ale and kamboucha from Sourhouse, Bangalore. I also love the idea of carrying hot tea or coffee in a flask.

You can even think of making sandwiches or chopping fruit together.

Do remember to take along something sweet - fruits, cookies, a cake...

Enjoy and live in the moment

Pack stuff and special treats for everyone to enjoy:

For a balcony picnic, consider bringing along a few favourite books, board games, a ball or frisbee, and a pack of cards. With these, there's a variety of entertainment options, ensuring that everyone has something enjoyable to do. Books offer a relaxing escape, board games encourage friendly competition, and a ball or frisbee allows for some light physical activity. Cards are versatile and can be used for many different games, making them a great addition to any picnic. Don't forget, "homemade laddoos or barfis", candied nuts or anything that children and grown-ups would love to munch on.

Picnic essentials

Make sure to include a few essentials on your checklist: a bottle opener, a bread knife/vegetable knife, a bin for trash, napkins, and a flask of tea or coffee. Also, pack plates, mugs, glasses, sunglasses, and sunscreen to ensure you're fully prepared and comfortable throughout your picnic.

A little decor

A bunch of flowers to spruce up the picnic spread! Again, you don't need to go into choosing expensive flowers. Blooms from your backyard are just great.

A balcony picnic is a delightful and convenient way to enjoy a relaxing weekend. With a little preparation and some creativity, you can create a memorable and enjoyable experience right at home. So, gather your essentials, prepare some delicious homemade treats, and savor the fresh air and sunshine from the comfort of your balcony.
